Award-winning Reporter Takes the Helm as Executive Editor/Columnist

We are honored to welcome veteran journalist D. Kevin McNeir to NJ Urban News.

An award-winning reporter who has worked primarily for the Black Press in a career now spanning more than 25 years, Kevin joins our team as Executive Editor/Columnist.

An educator and Teacher of the Year in Detroit, former IBM administration specialist, ordained elder in the United Methodist Church and former pastor in the New Jersey Conference, he has held multiple editorial positions in the newsroom for publications, all members of Black Press USA or Black-owned, that include: Emerge, National Black MBA Magazine, The Grand Rapids Times, the Michigan Chronicle, N’DIGO Magapaper (Chicago), The Atlanta Voice, The Miami Times and The Washington Informer where he continues to serve as editor.

From his vantage point in the Greater Washington D.C. Area, he will supply our readers with breaking news impacting African Americans no matter where they live, work or play.

In 2011, as senior editor for The Miami Times, he guided the historic, Black family-owned weekly, founded nearly a century ago, to the coveted award of National Newspaper Publishers Association Publication of the Year. In that same year, he garnered first place awards for both news and feature writing.

Kevin’s educational achievements include: B.A., University of Michigan, English/Marketing; Emory University, Candler School of Theology, Master of Divinity, magna cum laude; and Princeton Theological Seminary, Master of Theology. While at Princeton, he studied under Cornel West, Nell Painter, Al Raboteau, Gayle Pemberton, Toni Morrison and Peter Paris in the Ph.D. Program for Philosophy and Ethics, choosing to end his studies prior to the completion of his dissertation after family concerns required him to return to his hometown of Detroit.

He continues to further master his skills as a writer and researcher with awards recent awards that include: Journalists in Aging Fellows Program, 2017; Journalists in Aging Post-Fellows Program, 2018; and Maynard 200 Fellows Program for Leaders, Entrepreneurs and Storytellers.
