Newark Public Library hosts 6th Annual Black Lives Matter-Newark panel discussion

The 6th Annual BlackLivesMatter-Newark panel discussion took place Thursday at the Newark Public Library highlighting sports and activism with local coaches and community activists.

Speakers on the panel consisted of Shawn McCray, Founder of Zoo Crew Basketball program and head basketball coach at Newark Central High School, Vanessa Watson, head coach of the Bloomfield College women’s basketball team, Douglas Freeman, Founder and President, Weequahic Park Sports Authority and tennis instructor Tommy Garrett. 

Author, media contributor, lifestyle empowerment strategist and social impact executive Cecelia “CC” Minton served as moderator.

The panel discussion is part of the Newark Public Library's Black History Month Celebration. Upcoming events include "A Conversation about Sports and Community Activism" with Newark native and professional boxer Shakur Stevenson on Feb. 22 and a screening of the YouTube docu-series Best Shot produced by LeBron James, which chronicles the 2017-18 season of the Newark Central High School boys’ basketball team.
