Mayor Ras J. Baraka and officials from the City of Newark serving weekly warm meals to the city's homeless and low-income residents in December.

The feedings began on Dec. 1 at the Vincent Lombardi Center of Hope (201 Bloomfield Ave.) and will continue every Sunday throughout the month on Dec. 8, 15, 22 and 29 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

More than half of the children receiving the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in Essex County were Newark children in 2016. Last month, the State's Department of Human Services reported that Nearly 900,000 New Jersey residents are food insecure, meaning they lack regular access to enough affordable food for themselves and their families.

Call Deputy Mayor Jacqueline Quiles at 973-733-4310 for more information on the weekly communities.
