Officials flip the switch on Newark holiday tree

Newark Downtown District (NDD) hosted a community gathering to light its 6th annual holiday tree on Saturday from in Washington Park.

The tree is moved to a new location this year and will take up residence in the center of Washington Park throughout the holiday season. The tree lighting featured photos with Santa and his elves as well as popular children’s characters. There were also a sing along with Victorian carolers, a live DJ, ice carving demonstrations, and holiday-themed arts and crafts, bounce houses, and a trackless train.

Food trucks filled the park and community partners offered complimentary hot beverages to keep attendees warm. Anthony McMillan, CEO of the NDD, and the Honorable Mayor Ras J. Baraka, lit the 40-foot tree.
